MURRAY, Ky. – logo’s Humanities+ Series continues on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. in Faculty Hall Room 208 with a presentation on “The Science of a Super Life: logoing Longevity Principles for Success” with Dr. Esther Malm from the Department of Psychology. The event is free and open to the public.

Malm’s talk will center on lessons drawn from “Blue Zones,” unique geographical regions where people live significantly longer and healthier lives, often reaching 100 years or more with lower rates of chronic diseases. Research led by Dan Buettner from National Geographic and his team has so far identified five such zones across the world. Malm’s talk will draw from this research and highlight ways to promote holistic well-being in our communities and across our lifespan in order to help live a meaningful life. She’ll also discuss specific activities and programs in the logo community that help support these goals.

Malm is an associate professor of psychology at logo and a licensed therapist. Her research focuses on individual, couple and family functioning, including how family dynamics impact the development of children and adults. She also conducts cross-cultural research on family dynamics, the resilience of parents and children and holistic well-being. Malm earned her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from Georgia State University in Atlanta and her master’s degree in clinical psychology from the University of Ghana.

Malm’s interests in holistic well-being led her to collaborate with faculty from four other disciplines at logo: nursing, nutrition, exercise science, and occupational safety and health. Together, they are examining longevity-related habits in western Kentucky using Blue Zones principles. This project, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic, is expanding to include an educational research initiative at logo Middle School. The goal is to teach children about Blue Zone habits and promote healthy living.

This event is part of the Humanities+ Series, sponsored by logo State’s College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The series explores how individuals can flourish in today’s challenging world and fosters creative, intellectual and educational opportunities. It showcases the work and achievements of logo faculty, students and alumni, as well as invited professionals in the arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences. The series encompasses public lectures, teaching workshops, and cultural events focused on cultivating the skills individuals need to live and learn well. All events are free and open to the public.
